Electrical Inspection & Certification
For Your Peace of Mind
Assurance of SafetyYou're planning to spend a lot of money on a home renovation, perhaps
even putting on an addition that involves new wiring. |
|
| To ensure your family's safety and protection an Electrical Safety Authority electrical inspector will check any electrical work done in your home to make sure it meets the requirements of the Electrical Safety Code of Ontario. The Code is a comprehensive regulation that minimizes risks of fire and electrical shocks. | |
| By law all electrical wiring installations in Ontario whether
they be in a home, office or industrial building must be inspected and
certified as meeting code requirements after inspection by an Electrical
Safety Authority inspector. |
|
| The inspector's main function is to protect you and other occupants of your building by ensuring the safety of the electrical systems. |
Inexpensive InsuranceAn electrical inspection is inexpensive insurance that can give you real peace of mind. Once an inspection has been completed and the electrical work is found to be acceptable, a Certificate of Inspection is issued. If a contractor is doing the work for you, ask to see the certificate before you make the final payment. Then you can relax when flipping the light switch or turning on the heat or air conditioning, knowing the wiring is safe. |

Inspect Wiring & Provide Safety TipsMost inspections are for wiring and electrical equipment installations.
An inspector can help you by answering questions providing valuable
safety tips like how to avoid overloading circuits, installing the proper
number of outlets to prevent "octopus" connections on one
outlet, and the danger of running extension cords under carpet. When
installations do not conform to the Code, inspectors will explain what
correction should be made to make the work safe before they certify
the work. |
|
| Inspectors also advise on the safety of electrical equipment imported into Ontario or manufactured here. They ensure that any equipment offered for sale to the public meets the Code requirements, has been tested and certified as such by a recognized authority such as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The need for safe electrical equipment has never been greater. A global economy means that more electrical products come into Ontario from many different countries around the world and we all need protection from unsafe equipment. |
Contact An Inspection OfficeArranging for an inspection is easy. Before any electrical work is begun, the person doing the work should obtain an "Application for Inspection", Applications are available at any Electrical Safety Authority Inspection Office (see below). Inspection office staff can help you complete the application forms, schedule the inspection, and provide information and advice on working safely with electricity. A good thing to remember-wiring must not be concealed (for example by drywall) before the inspection. |
